The Story of the Firm

A Builder Who
Answers the Phone

Kirby Taylor Homes was founded on a simple premise that turned out to be rare in the Houston residential construction market: that the clients who trust you with the most significant project of their lives deserve to deal directly with the principal, not a rotating cast of project managers and assistants.

For more than two decades, that premise has shaped every decision we make — how many projects we accept per year, how we structure our contracts, how we staff each job, and how we communicate throughout construction. Kirby Taylor does not build homes from a distance. He builds them the way he always has: in person, on site, and accountable for every detail.

The firm grew initially through repeat clients and direct referrals — a growth pattern that continues today. Ninety percent of our new projects come through someone who has already experienced Kirby’s work firsthand. We have never needed to compete on price because we have always competed on something more durable: trust.

We have never built a business around advertising. We built it around clients who trusted us enough to tell their closest friends and family. That confidence is our most important credential.

What Makes This Firm Different

The Principal-Led
Model

In a market where ‘the owner’ is often a figurehead who attends the kickoff meeting and the final walkthrough, the Kirby Taylor Homes principal-led model is a genuine structural difference — not a marketing claim.

Kirby Taylor is your point of contact from first conversation to key delivery. He attends weekly on-site reviews, reviews every subcontractor bid personally, signs every change order, and is reachable by phone throughout the project. This is not a promise we make in brochures and break in practice. It is the only way we have ever operated — and the reason our clients refer us without hesitation.

The natural consequence of this model is that we limit our active project count. We will never compromise the quality of your engagement to take on a project we cannot supervise personally. If our calendar is full when you call, we will tell you honestly — and earn your trust for when it is not.

01

Direct Principal Access

Kirby’s personal phone number is in your contacts from day one. Questions, concerns, decisions — they go directly to the person responsible, not an office coordinator who relays messages.

02

On-Site Weekly Reviews

Every active project receives a documented weekly site review led by Kirby — not a junior supervisor. Issues are identified and addressed before they become problems or change orders.

03

Personal Subcontractor Relationships

Our subcontractor relationships span twenty years. These trades work with us because of Kirby’s direct involvement and standards — not because we offer the largest volume of work at the lowest margins.

04

Limited Annual Capacity

We accept a deliberately limited number of projects each year. You are one of a small number of clients whose work Kirby is actively supervising — never one of dozens competing for his attention.

05

Post-Completion Relationship

Our clients call Kirby when they need a trade referral, when a warranty question arises, or when they are ready to begin their next project. The relationship does not end at key delivery.

Earned Designations

Earned Designations.
Not Purchased Memberships.

Every credential Kirby Taylor carries was earned through demonstrated expertise, completed coursework, and ongoing professional education — not simply by paying a membership fee.

GMB

NAHB Graduate Master Builder

The Graduate Master Builder designation from the National Association of Home Builders is the industry’s highest recognition for custom home builders. It requires documented project experience, completed graduate-level coursework, and a commitment to continuing education. Fewer than 1% of residential builders in the United States hold this designation.

Held by fewer than 1% of U.S. builders

CGR

Certified Graduate Remodeler

The Certified Graduate Remodeler designation is the NAHB’s highest professional recognition for remodeling specialists. It validates expertise in project management, contract administration, business practices, and client service specifically within the renovation context — the discipline Kirby Taylor Homes has made its primary focus for twenty years.

Renovation-specific expertise, formally recognized

CGP

Certified Green Professional

The Certified Green Professional designation validates expertise in high-performance building science — energy efficiency, indoor air quality, resource conservation, and sustainable material selection. For historic home renovation, this credential is especially relevant: we know how to modernize an aging home’s performance without compromising its character or material authenticity.

How We Work

Three Principles
That Have
Never Changed

These are not values we added to a website. They are operational decisions we made in the first year and have never walked back — because every time we considered it, we realized they were the reason our clients trust us.

01

Transparency Before Agreement

We do not quote a project until we understand it fully — which means opening walls, inspecting structure, and documenting what every other contractor is guessing about. The fixed-price contract you sign reflects reality, not optimism. If we discover something unexpected during construction that we could not have anticipated even with our assessment, we tell you immediately — in writing, with a photograph, and with the cost impact clearly stated. No surprises in month four.

02

Precision Over Speed

We publish timelines we can defend. When Houston weather delays exterior work for two weeks, we tell you immediately — not at the next scheduled meeting. We build schedule float into every project because historic homes demand it: the brick match you need does not always arrive on the day the vendor promises. We plan for reality, not the ideal scenario. Clients who have built with production builders before are often surprised that we actually hit our completion dates.

03

One Client at a Time, Always

The principal-led model is only credible if it is structurally enforced. We deliberately limit our active project calendar so that Kirby can be present on every site every week without exception. This means we sometimes turn away work we would like to take on. It also means the clients we do accept receive something increasingly rare in Houston residential construction: the full, undivided attention of a principal who has staked his name on the outcome.
